DOJO AND TRAINING ETIQUETTE

Practice the seven virtues of bushido (martial way) which are: Gi (integrity), Yu (courage), Jin (compassion), Rei (respect), Makoto (sincerity), Meiyo (honour) and Chuugi (loyalty).

Always be respectful and mindful of your surroundings. Be observant and alert. Be orderly, neat and clean.

Place your footwear neatly at the entrance and place your belongings neatly at the designated area.

Before entering the dojo prepare your mind, body and spirit for training.

Enter the dojo with a kneeling bow to the shomen (front of dojo), followed by a bow to the people that are inside the dojo. You can be on the mat 15 min before class to do your own warm up and stretching.

You can bring your water bottle into the dojo. Please place it neatly at the back.

Always be respectful to the dojo and fellow practitioners.

Always keep your dogi clean and bring a small towel with you.

Be seated in seiza position 5 min before class starts.

The instructor who is taking the class together with all practitioners in seiza position will begin and end with 3 claps and a bow to the shomen. (3 claps represent gratitude to O’Sensei (the founder), the art of Aikido and the Dojo (which consist of the space and the people we train with).

Follow the instructions of the instructor by listening and observing closely.

Avoid talking during training.

Train sincerely and be respectful and considerate towards one another while maintaining awareness and mindfulness.

When the instructor is demonstrating a technique be seated in seiza position. Pay full attention and do not take out your towel to wipe your perspiration or adjust your dogi.

Take care of your training partners and train according to each other’s ability.

Begin and end each technique with a bow to your training partner.

If you need to drink water during training do so quickly at the back of the dojo and face away from the shomen.
