ABOUT

WHAT IS AIKIDO?

Aikido is a modern Japanese martial art created by Morihei Ueshiba (O’Sensei) in the 1920s.

It is performed by joining and blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of an attack rather than opposing it head-on. Aikido is a non-combative martial art and there is no competition. The founder created aikido as a martial art of peace and harmony.

"Progress comes to those who train and train; reliance on secret techniques will get you nowhere."

"The purpose of training
is to tighten up the slack, toughen the body, and
polish the spirit."

UESHIBA MORIHEI

Aíkido is suitable for everyone regardless of gender, age or size. Due to its nature of non-combativeness and non-competitiveness, aikido training is safe. Thus, it is very suitable for seniors & women, and everyone trains and improves at their own pace. Its training and techniques focus on natural body movement, locks and throws with a stable posture without the use of force or strength.

On a physical level, aikido improves agility, coordination, posture and balance. On a psychological level, we learn to be calm and relaxed. As such, it is very helpful with the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the practitioner. As a non-violent martial art that is based on natural movement, aikido at its technical core is a very effective form of self-defence without harming an assailant.

We conduct our classes and administer our grading in line with the Aikikai Foundation which is the parent organisation for the development and popularisation of Aikido throughout the world. The Aikikai Foundation and Aikido World Headquarters (Hombu Dojo) is currently headed by Doshu, Moriteru Ueshiba and Dojocho Mitsuteru Ueshiba.
